Over the years, I think I’ve embraced nearly every decorating style — from shabby chic to farmhouse to modern coastal — and just about everything in between. But no matter how often the aesthetic of our home changes, one thing always stays the same: my love of any space in any Nancy Meyers movie. More than just a look, Nancy Meyers interiors evoke a feeling I want to create in our home — elevated, comfortable, calm, and collected. If you feel the same way, in today’s post I’m taking a look at some of my favorite Nancy Meyers movies and interiors, with ideas on how to decorate your kitchen, living room, and home with beautiful Nancy Meyers style.
Favorite Nancy Meyers Interiors
So what is it about the Nancy Meyers aesthetic that draws us in? To me, Nancy Meyers style embraces all the little things that make a house feel like home — herbs on the kitchen windowsill, bowls of fruit, fresh flowers, stacks of books everywhere, cozy slipcovered furniture, casually thrown pillows, and an abundance of natural light.
Nancy Meyers movies, like Something’s Gotta Give, It’s Complicated, The Holiday, and The Intern, manage to make every room feel like one of the characters, with a personality and charm all its own.
You find yourself wanting to pause each frame of the movie so you can take in every delightful detail.
Something’s Gotta Give
I first became enchanted with Nancy Meyers interiors in 2003, when I saw the film Something’s Gotta Give.
Even though I loved all the characters in the movie, it was the chic Hamptons style kitchen and living room belonging to the lead character Erica Barry (Diane Keaton) that captured my heart.
In fact, when our current home was being built, we added French doors and transom windows to our living room, inspired by this space:
Nancy Meyers Kitchens
A Nancy Meyers kitchen is always filled with charm and detail. Fresh flowers, bowls of fruit, and shelves lined with well-loved cookbooks.
Here’s the timeless Hamptons beach house kitchen that put Meyers’ style on the map.
Isn’t it amazing that this kitchen is still in style 21 years later? No wonder this space is known as “the most copied kitchen of all time!”
And here is the original Nancy Meyers kitchen, which popped up in my Pinterest feed. Apparently, Meyers modeled the Something’s Gotta Give kitchen after her own.
Nancy Meyers’ kitchen – Architectural Digest
Perfect for cooking and entertaining, Meyers’ beautiful kitchen is obviously the heart of the home, featuring plenty of natural light and two oversized kitchen islands.
One island is fitted with a black countertop, ready for family gatherings, while the second island features a white marble countertop with a prep sink, similar to the stylish kitchen featured in The Intern, below.
The Intern
I love all the homey details in The Intern kitchen–fresh herbs in clay pots, wooden utensils corralled in an earthenware crock, jars filled with culinary essentials, the parade of pitchers on the top shelf.
Here’s another view of this space–so many interesting details!
It’s Complicated
Meyers took her kitchens up a notch with It’s Complicated, starring Meryl Streep as Jane, a bakery owner who whips up fabulous dinners and desserts for her family and friends.
Needless to say, Jane’s kitchen is a dream. With hanging copper pots, stacks of white porcelain on open shelving, and a floating marble island, this Nancy Meyers kitchen exudes timeless California casual style:
I’m probably the only person on the planet who noticed this, but there’s a dent in Jane’s refrigerator in It’s Complicated –– for some reason, that little slice of reality made me love the movie even more.
The Holiday
Cameron Diaz’s LA house in The Holiday was the epitome of chic California style — and still is — with an abundance of buttery whites, cushy slipcovers, and warm woods.
There’s something so comforting about a Nancy Meyers movie. Somehow she manages to make all of the interiors feel both aspirational and accessible.
They aren’t too perfect and look like someone actually lives there.
By the way, interior designer James Radin and set decorator Beth Rubino worked with Nancy Meyers on almost all of her films, bringing these wonderful spaces to life.
While the interiors in Nancy Meyers movies are decorated in different styles — Hamptons style, beach house, modern, transitional, boho, heritage style, California casual — there’s a common theme running through each of these homes.
They’re approachable, comfortable, light, and filled with organic textures and layers.
Speaking of layers and textures, here’s a look at Meyers’ own living room, which I spotted recently on Pinterest. I adore her laid-back, elevated style — and sweet grand-pups!
What is the Nancy Meyers Aesthetic?
Although this is something I’m still figuring out in my own home, if you want to add a touch of Nancy Meyers design style to your kitchen, bedrooms, entryway, or living room, I’d recommend decorating with timeless pieces, rather than anything too modern or traditional.
Avoid trendy looks (i.e., anything you’re seeing over and over again on Instagram). And, when possible, go for real elements, rather than faux.
- Think jute, wool or sisal rugs rather than synthetic fibers.
- Soft cotton or linen slipcovers and bedding.
- Ceramic or terracotta planters instead of plastic or resin.
- Fresh herbs on the windowsill, a vase of fresh flowers, orchids, or lush plants in terracotta pots. See my post on Orchid Care Tips if you’d like to bring the beauty of orchids to your home.
- Wood cutting boards.
- Linen aprons, napkins, and dishtowels.
- Display lovely items used for cooking: a salt & pepper cellar, a marble mortar and pestle, olive oils, wood utensils and rolling pins gathered in a crock.
- If you have a collection of white porcelain pitchers or bowls, display it on open shelving in the kitchen or dining room.
- Copper pots and pans — preferably displayed on an iron pot hanger.
- Fruits and veg on display on kitchen counters, along with wood cutting boards and marble pastry boards.
- White or off-white curtains in cotton or linen.
- Baskets everywhere.
- Candlelight.
- Black & white family photos displayed in silver frames.
- Mementos from your travels.
- Lots of books, stacked and displayed on shelves, side tables, console tables and coffee tables–even on the floor.
- Display a few cookbooks — either propped up or opened to a favorite recipe on an easel.
At the bottom of this post, I share a few places to find Nancy Meyers style decor, as well as some of my favorite pieces.

Coastal Grandmother Style
Tying in beautifully with this style is the coastal grandmother interior design trend.
Incorporating a Hamptons-inspired Nancy Meyers aesthetic and fresh modern coastal style, coastal grandma style is all about embracing a relaxed coastal lifestyle — even if you don’t live near the coast and/or aren’t a grandmother!
In coastal grandmother interiors, you’ll see plenty of easy-care white slipcovered furniture, neutral hues of the sand and sea, flowers, ginger jars, and natural and organic elements — all of which speak to the more thoughtful and intentional way of living and decorating portrayed in our favorite Nancy Meyers movies. For more on the coastal grandmother aesthetic, modern coastal decor, beach house style, heritage style, and current decorating trends, you might be interested in these posts:

I had a lot of fun putting this post together, and I hope you enjoyed taking a look at some of the best Nancy Meyers interiors.
As a Nancy Meyers fan and coastal home decor lover, I’m excited to see the resurgence in popularity of the Nancy Meyers aesthetic, which embraces everything I love about interior design.
Although Nancy Meyers interiors are decidedly upscale, adopting this look doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.
Just look at your home with a fresh eye, rethink how you use your spaces, and use what you have to convey the feeling you want. Because when you think about it, a feeling is what we’re all trying to create in our homes.
At its core, the Nancy Meyers aesthetic is all about creating a beautiful life — whatever that looks like for you! xo Jane

I enjoy your style and have been in the process of updating my own home more toward the “Coastal Grandmother” style you’ve written about. Guess it’s appropriate for me at the age of 71 and living near the beach! Keep it coming!

January 9, 2022 at 1:32 amI fell hard for the Something’s Gotta Give house too. And had a Nancy / Ina Garten inspired kitchen shortly thereafter. Then along came It’s Complicated. I tried, and failed, to create the vegetable garden. I later learned it wasn’t real so Didn’t feel too bad. All the her movies you mention are fabulous and I could watch them all over and over again. Her daughter’s movie starring Reece Witherspoon was pretty fantastic too. I love how you utilize a basket for cookbooks. Genius! More Nancy Meyer movies, please! xo

January 9, 2022 at 12:23 pmHi Juliet! I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one who tried and failed the It’s Complicated vegetable garden. (Too complicated, I guess!) I also loved her daughter’s movie, with its colorful boho vibe. There’s just so much to love about a Nancy Meyers movie, and I truly hope she’ll grace us with a few more! Hope your new year is off to a fabulous start, my friend. xo Jane

January 7, 2022 at 1:41 pmHappy New Year! Definitely an aspirational post – these Nancy Meyers (and your) interiors also somewhat reminded me of Ina Garten’s (aka Barefoot Contessa) home and barn kitchen vibe. Approachable and therefore liveable!

January 8, 2022 at 7:05 amHi Mariangela! Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. I’ll need to check out Ina’s home and kitchen for inspiration! I love her recipes, but oddly, I’ve never checked out her interiors–I’m sure they’re absolutely beautiful. I hope your year is off to a great start, my friend! xo Jane

July 3, 2021 at 2:49 pmI absolutely love Nancy Meyers movies and will watch them over and over again! In fact, I watched The Holiday yesterday. I loved this post so much. All the decor you described perfectly describes her style in those movies and how to incorporate that into our own homes. I think the “lived in” look is beautiful. Thanks again for your post.

June 11, 2021 at 11:37 amThis is my FAVORITE post you have ever done. I am waiting for someone to come out with a Nancy Meyer Interiors book. As you point out, there are commonalities with every house in her movies that I have loved: Father of the Bride, The Parent Trap, What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday, It’s Complicated, The Intern, Home Again. The soundtracks of every one of her movies are great as well. THANK YOU for doing this blog, because it’s those “homey” intangibles that we as women love, which make a house a home!
Jane
June 11, 2021 at 1:55 pmHi Donna! Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I couldn’t agree more about the homey intangibles. And I love the idea of a Nancy Meyers interiors book! Thank you, too, for mentioning all the other great NM movies–I need to go back and revisit some of these! xo Jane
