I’ve always been drawn to interior design styles that bring a touch of warmth and sense of place to a home — and coastal farmhouse style does just that, blending the breezy charm of the coast with the coziness and welcoming warmth of modern farmhouse decor.
A couple of years ago, my husband and I took a detour through a new coastal community located on Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
With their metal roofs, white siding, black-framed windows, and wood accents, the beautiful homes in that upscale neighborhood perfectly reflected coastal farmhouse style architecture.
Since the exteriors were so gorgeous, it made me curious about coastal farmhouse interiors, so I started gathering ideas and inspiration on this beautiful interior design and decor style.
And in today’s post, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned about this chic, timeless aesthetic, including how to incorporate it in your spaces and ideas and inspiration for bringing this style to life in your home.
What is coastal farmhouse style?
Coastal farmhouse style is the perfect mix of relaxed sophistication and down-to-earth comfort, combining the elegance of coastal decor with the simplicity of modern farmhouse interior design.

Some key elements of coastal farmhouse style include:
- Neutral and soft tones like crisp whites, sandy beiges, and ocean blues. I’ve found that when I stick with a color scheme that reflects the sea, sand, and sky, everything seems to work together.
- Natural materials like wood, wicker, rattan, and linen.
- Beachy accents like dreamy ocean-inspired artwork.
The beauty of this style lies in its lived-in, effortless vibe — perfect for creating a welcoming and serene home.
How does coastal farmhouse style differ from modern farmhouse decor?
While both coastal farmhouse and modern farmhouse styles embrace a relaxed, lived-in charm, they differ in their key influences and aesthetic details.
Coastal farmhouse style draws inspiration from the sea, featuring a breezy palette of whites, blues, and sandy neutrals, along with natural materials like rattan, jute, and linen.

Modern coastal farmhouse interiors typically incorporate beach-inspired decor and light wood finishes that evoke the feeling of a coastal retreat.
Modern farmhouse style, on the other hand, leans into a rustic-meets-modern aesthetic with its use of black accents, industrial lighting, and earthy tones like deep greens and rich browns.
It often highlights clean lines, shiplap walls, and vintage-inspired furnishings with a slightly more polished, contemporary edge.
While coastal farmhouse feels airy and sunlit, modern farmhouse tends to have a cozier, grounded vibe.
How to Add Coastal Farmhouse Style to Your Home
When decorating with coastal farmhouse style, try to balance the coastal and farmhouse elements, as too much of one style can overpower the other. The overall goal is harmony.
Remember to keep it light and airy by sticking with lighter tones and avoiding heavy, dark furnishings.
Incorporate a mix old and new elements in your spaces by combining modern touches with a few vintage finds for a collected look.
Celebrate the imperfection of weathered wood finishes and patina, as they add character and charm to your home.
The beautiful inspiration images shown below will give you additional ideas on how to incorporate coastal farmhouse style in your home.
