Summer is, by far, my favorite season–and to make sure I have plenty of time to enjoy it, I keep my summer decorating simple and easy. If you’re looking for ways to refresh your home and give it that light and airy summer feeling, I’ve gathered a few easy summer decorating ideas to share with you today.
By sticking with a cohesive color scheme throughout our home–mostly neutrals with touches of blue–I’m able to move pillows, rugs, and decor from room to room to create a new look using what I already own, saving both time and money.
Inspired by the colors of nature, I love to bring the outdoors in as much as possible. Adding flowers, branches and plants from the back yard and mementos from coastal vacations are simple ways to decorate your home for summer.

Whether you want to add a touch of summer decor to your entire home or just certain spaces, you’ll find easy ways to add a relaxed summertime feeling to your home.
Simple Summer Decorating Ideas in Our Home
In the living room:
White walls (Simply White by Benjamin Moore) and curtains, as well as lighter tones and textures, help bring a summery feeling to our living room. Adding in a blue rug, as well as an assortment of blue pillows, makes this space feel happy and relaxed.
Last summer I replaced the indigo rug with this dark navy and white striped jute rug and brought in the slipcovered sectional from our family room.
I love white slipcovers for summer! When they get dirty I just throw them in the washing machine with detergent and a little bleach or oxy clean.
I always stick with a light and airy color palette in our home, incorporating the shades of the sea, sand, and sky.
Baskets are one of my favorite ways to bring in some texture for a fresh summertime feeling. As far as I’m concerned, you can never have too many baskets–and the best thing is, they never go out of style!
In the hearth room:
The area below is the hearth room and TV room adjacent to our kitchen. In the summer, I like to incorporate a bit of a beach-house feeling in here with plenty of stripes, baskets, and greenery.
With an English bulldog in the house, white slipcovers that can be removed and thrown in the washing machine are a must!
In the dining room:
Our dining room doesn’t see much action in the summertime, since we eat outdoors as often as possible. But it is nice to have one space in the house that always stays clean!
I recently added this jute rug, and I love how it refreshed this space. It’s a bit too small for this space–I bought a 5 x 8, intending to use it elsewhere. But once I got it under the table, I liked it so much I didn’t want to move it!
In the kitchen:
Fresh flowers are my favorite way to bring the feeling of summer to our kitchen!
Our open shelving usually gets a summer update, too, with the addition of a few lighter-toned accent pieces.
Even something as simple as a basket, or canister displayed on the counter … or a pretty dish towel or two, can add a fresh touch to your kitchen for summer.
Here’s a look at our updated breakfast nook–I’m so happy to have this space lightened up for summer! Previously, we had a dark wood dining table and a fabric light fixture that made this space feel a bit drab.
In the master bedroom:
My favorite color combination of blue and white creates a cool and calm atmosphere in our master bedroom for summer. I love the crisp, clean look of white bedding.
Coastal artwork is another great way to add a summery feeling to any space. The piece in our bedroom was purchased locally a couple of years ago, but I found a few similar options here.
In the guest bedroom:
Our guest bedrooms stay busy this time of year, as friends and family love our temperate Rocky Mountain summers.
Shades of crisp blue and white help create a cool and comfortable atmosphere for visitors.
On the patio:
Our patio is our favorite place to hang out all summer long. We like to carry our drinks out here after dinner to enjoy the glorious summer sunsets! Our outdoor curtains give us a little extra privacy and much-needed shade on sunny days.
Earlier this summer, we had doves and robins nesting under the eaves out here, which meant we weren’t able to use this space for fear of disturbing them. Even though being banished from our patio was a bit of an inconvenience, we felt like proud parents once the baby dove and four baby robins successfully flew from their nests!
Wishing you a beautiful summer! xo jane
