Good morning! Today I’m sharing a few easy summer decor ideas for every space in your home. Whether you want to add a light touch of summer here and there or try out an entirely new look for 2024, these simple decorating ideas and tips will help you add a modern summery look and feeling to your living room, bedroom, kitchen, entryway, and patio.
Since I love decorating with modern coastal style, our home is essentially summery all year long, so I don’t need to do a lot of seasonal decorating.
By sticking with a color scheme that reflects the ocean, sand, and sky: crisp whites, neutral hues, and fresh blues –everything flows easily from one season to the next.
Although there are many versions of coastal style, my favorite is a mix of relaxed beach house, classic Hamptons, and Nancy Meyers style. (See my favorite Nancy Meyers interiors in this post.)
However, any version of coastal decor or beach house style which incorporates things like woven elements, light woods, baskets, natural fiber rugs, and easy-care slipcovers in fabrics like cotton and linen, lends itself perfectly to these summer decor ideas.
Easy Summer Home Decor Ideas for 2024
1. Liven things up with plants and flowers
Using fresh flowers to bring the beauty of the outdoors inside is one of my favorite summer decorating ideas.
Although I love all flowers, white hydrangeas always lend an elegant touch to any spot!

Trader Joe’s is a great option for beautiful flowers and greenery.
Even though our nearest Trader Joe’s is a 45-minute drive, their amazing selection and prices make it worth the trip.
If you don’t have fresh flowers readily available, green and flowering plants always add a touch of vibrancy to any space!
I especially love white orchids for their easy care, elegance and beauty–even when they aren’t blooming.
Here’s my post on how to care for orchids and get them to rebloom.
Another easy way to brighten up a space for spring and summer is with greenery and branches.
Just a few simple sprigs of greenery can bring so much life and color to a room!
2. Or, go faux
If you don’t have access to fresh flowers or plants, then faux is always a great option.
Faux plants and flowers look amazingly real these days.
Many artificial plants and flowers give off the same fresh vibe as living plants. Target, Hobby Lobby, and Michael’s are great sources for faux greenery and plants.
Faux plants are a great idea for styling shelves, coffee tables and other wood surfaces because you don’t have to worry about water ruining the wood.

3. Refresh your styling
Refreshing your home for summer can be as simple as making little styling tweaks to coffee tables, shelves, mantel décor, and kitchen countertops.

Even something as simple as a new dish towel draped over the sink can add a fresh touch of summer to the kitchen. Anthropologie is my favorite source for pretty dish towels.
See our kitchen renovation details, including painting our cabinets, in this post.
My favorite way to refresh our home for a new season is by finding new ways to use things I already have on hand.
I like to borrow bowls and pedestals from the kitchen and use them as decorative pieces in other areas of our home.
If I don’t like how something looks, I can easily change it by moving things around or borrowing items from another part of the house!
Here are a few tips for styling and decorating shelves, coffee tables, and china cabinets:
- use stacks of books to raise objects off the surfaces
- combine items in groups of threes–preferably with a tall item, a shorter, more sculptural item, and a horizontal item
- edit — this is a tough one for me, because I tend to overdo–I’m learning to edit until I achieve a the right look for each space (although I still tend to go back and fiddle with things later)
- balance hard and soft objects, as well as things with different textures, colors, tones, and styles
- turn books around to reveal the lighter-colored pages
- layer–placing some things in front of others and some off to the side–to create more depth and give the space a more natural look

4. Update Your Bedding
The warmer months are all about ease, so this is the perfect time to add a light touch to your bedroom with white bedding.
Or, simply refresh your look by switching out your blankets, throws, and pillows with lighter-weight and lighter-toned versions.
I love white bedding all year round, but especially in spring and summer, because it makes our master bedroom and guest bedroom feel fresh and cheerful.
The hemmed sheets and duvet cover in our guest bedroom are incredibly soft, creating a cozy and comfortable haven for friends and family.
5. Rearrange the furniture
One of the easiest ways to update your home for a new season is to rearrange your furniture–although sometimes I forget what a huge difference this little change can make!
We recently moved this sectional from the hearth room to the living room, and it completely transformed the feeling of this space.
Rearranging the furniture only takes a few minutes, but it can return dividends in good feelings, making you fall in love with your home again.
6. Add a touch of color
When it comes to adding color to your home, you can never go wrong with pairing colors that exist together in nature.
For summer 2024, think about adding some lush greens, sky blues, and cloud whites to your spaces.
We have the chairs shown above in cream, but I’m loving this version in light blue–such a great way to bring a touch of color and a relaxed summer aesthetic to the living room.
Here are the same chairs shown in the cream color in this summery space:

Blue is definitely on trend this year, as are muted greens. For more on this year’s design trends and color trends, you might be interested in these posts:

7. Pile on the pillows
One of my favorite, instant ways to add a fresh look to our home is by adding in some new pillows. Or, I simply rearrange the ones I already own.

If your pillow collection has grown to the point where it’s taking up an embarrassing amount of space in a closet (like mine), you might want to think about buying pillow covers from now on and just reusing the inserts from pillows you already own.

8. Update Your Artwork
One of the easiest ways to refresh your home for the warmer months is with new artwork.

The piece in our dining room, below, is no longer available, but I found a few similar pieces, which you can find on my Favorite Artwork page.
The wall art in our living room, below, is actually two identical sets which I alternated. Since they’re kind of fluid and abstract, I figured it wouldn’t be too obvious they’re the same.
I also like to keep several pre-matted frames on hand to fill with photos, purchased artwork, and artwork I create whenever the mood strikes.
Here are a few more art pieces I’m loving lately:
9. Welcome the sun
This is the perfect time of year to let in the light by replacing heavy or dark curtains with white or lighter-colored versions–or simply remove them altogether!
Another easy way to let in more sunshine is to raise your window shades higher during the day.
In the same vein, think about tweaking your artificial lighting sources, too. Replacing old light fixtures with new ones can give an entirely new look to a room.

10. Decorate your porch and patio for summer outdoor living
Every spring, I always look forward to decorating the porch and patio for the warmer months.
I love the fresh feeling of the outdoor spaces below.

One of my favorite summer decorating ideas is adding outdoor curtains and a few pillows and decorative pieces to make our outdoor areas feel like an extension of our home.
Here’s a look at our covered patio last summer, decorated with an abundance of blue and white decor, flowers, and plants.
Wishing you a beautiful summer! xo Jane
