As I’ve shared before, I have a special fondness for kitchens — and coffee! So when we remodeled our kitchen a few years ago, one of our first ideas was to replace some upper cabinets with open shelving to create a coffee bar and beverage area. Even though I was a bit nervous about tearing out those cabinets, our coffee bar ended up being one of my favorite things about our kitchen.

Both traditional and modern kitchens will incorporate unique built-in cabinetry features and smart appliances, including upscale barista-style coffee machines, ranges with sous-vide functions, Alexa-enabled refrigerators, and smart screens to pull up your favorite recipe or chat with family while you cook.
While stacked open shelving is still in style, kitchen designers are also loving the simple, uncluttered look of one long shelf — perhaps in glass, warm wood, or marble.
Lighting and cabinet hardware in chic mixed metal finishes and streamlined silhouettes are the new jewelry of the kitchen.

I love decorating our coffee station for the seasons and holidays — especially at Christmastime, when I bring out the twinkle lights, cocoa, marshmallows, and shimmering copper mugs.

- Wine and beverage coolers. As I mentioned above, beverage coolers are perfect for entertaining and add a luxurious touch to your coffee or drink station.
- Coffee makers with special features, like settings for advanced start, temperature control, and bold flavor, machines that work with any type of pod or your favorite ground coffee, and over ice features, which customize the brewing process to optimize the flavor for iced coffee.
- Sustainability. The use of eco-friendly machines and reusable filter cups and coffee accessories are on the rise and widely available now.

For small kitchens, compact coffee bars with wall-mounted racks and slim cabinets help maximize your space.
