If you’ve been following along for a while, you know I love to change the look of our home pretty often! I especially love refreshing our spaces as the seasons change. I’ve found that even the smallest adjustments can change the look and feel of an entire room. Today, I’m sharing how I recently refreshed and updated our kitchen for spring and summer, featuring beautiful new Serena & Lily Balboa counter stools!
Our Kitchen Refresh, featuring Serena & Lily Balboa Counter Stools
Our kitchen is the center of our home, where everyone naturally gathers. And I love having people keep me company while I’m cooking, so comfortable seating at the counter is a must!
That’s why I love our beautiful new counter stools from Serena and Lily’s Balboa line. Everything about these stools reflects comfort, ease, and thoughtful design – from the gently angled lines to the brass end caps on each leg.
I’ve actually had my eye on these stools for quite a while! I first saw them in the Serena and Lily catalog last summer and fell in love immediately!
In fact, the entire design for our recent kitchen renovation was inspired by these stools! It’s amazing how one thing can spark your imagination in such a strong way.
But once I saw the Balboa stools, the look I wanted for our kitchen came into view.
counter stools – light fixtures
Since variations are a part of this stool’s unique beauty, no two frames are exactly alike–which I love! In addition to the natural color, which I chose, these Serena and Lily stools also come in Mist, a lovely shade of light grey.
As in the rest of our home, I love keeping a light and airy look in the kitchen, incorporating soothing blues and whites. And these natural rattan stools fit right in with that style.
I’ve always loved rattan and its power to elevate a space without a lot of fuss.
Crafted by artisans, each stool begins with a mahogany frame. Then the gorgeous texture of each stool is achieved by weaving the rattan to create subtle variations in tone. Each piece is truly a one-of-a-kind work of art!
Each stool comes with a tailored cushion with a rubberized bottom to prevent sliding–and you can customize the look with different fabrics.
I chose the basket-weave fabric in white. But Serena & Lily also offers several other fabrics and patterns, including beautiful blue and white stripes!
I love that the cushions are designed to repel water and resist staining, which is perfect for our busy kitchen — especially when our five grands come to visit!
The brass foot rest and end caps on each leg add such a pretty finishing touch. These Serena and Lily stools are counter height, so the seat is about 24 1/2 inches from the floor, without the cushion.
The cushioned seats and back support make these counter stools extra comfortable, encouraging visitors to stop and stay for a while.
I love that the back isn’t too high, so the stools don’t obstruct the view from the kitchen into our hearth room/living area.
Our new stools bring a classic yet casual look to this space. I want our home to feel clean and crisp, but I don’t want it to seem formal or stuffy! That’s why I love Serena and Lily’s relaxed, carefree style. It’s perfect for our home and lifestyle.
These stools are exactly what I needed to finish this space, and I’m so happy with them! They’re the crowing touch to our kitchen!
With our new Serena and Lily stools and the other changes we’ve made in here, I love the feeling I get when I walk in the room!
Thanks for stopping by to see my Spring kitchen refresh, and thank you to Serena & Lily for working with me on finding the perfect counter stools for our kitchen! I wasn’t paid for this post, but Serena & Lily did provide the counter stools in exchange for my honest review. As always, all opinions are my own, and I only recommend products and brands I personally love and believe in.
Our home is a work in progress, and at some point I’d love to redo the flooring in this space. But I’m learning to appreciate each step along the way! When I look back on how far we’ve come, I feel truly grateful!
If you’re shopping for seating for your kitchen or dining area, Serena & Lily has so many beautiful options — and they’re adding more all the time!
Have a wonderful day! xo jane

January 27, 2021 at 11:11 amI am really considering the Balboa counter stools for my kitchen, but I have three kids (age 9, 6, and 4) and I’m wondering if it might not be a practical choice while I have spill-prone kids? I’m wondering your thoughts? I’ve been stalking them for months but just can’t quite pull the trigger!!! Would love your thoughts!!! 🙂 Thanks.

January 27, 2021 at 12:49 pmHi, Jessica, Thank you so much for reaching out! We have 3 grandchildren under the age of 7 who visit our house often, and they always make a beeline for these counter stools! We’ve had chocolate smudges, ice cream stains, red wine spills (from my husband–not the grandkids ), etc., and the cushion covers still look as good as new. Sometimes, the smudges wipe right off with a wet paper towel. Otherwise, I remove the cover, spray the spot with Oxy Clean, and pop it in the washing machine. I let them air dry before putting them back on and have never had a stain remain after washing. The other thing I like is the cushions have rubber on the bottoms, so they don’t slide around on the stool. The stools themselves are very sturdy, so I don’t have to worry about them tipping over when the kids are sitting or kneeling on them. Needless to say, I can recommend these stools without reservation. The only downside I can think of is that because they’re made from natural materials, no two stools are exactly alike. I actually like that feature, but others might prefer them to look identical. I hope this helps answer your concerns. Feel free to reach out with any more questions you might have! xo Jane

July 13, 2020 at 11:33 amHello!
My parents want to order these stools for their new kitchen they are about to renovating. We have a couple questions, one do the cushions slip easily on the seat? What holds them down? Also, can the cushions unzip to easily wash them?
Let me know.
Thanks,
Amy

July 13, 2020 at 4:51 pmHi Amy! The cushions actually have a rubber backing that keeps them from slipping — we haven’t had any issues with them slipping at all. And they do have a zipper which allows you to remove the cover and wash them. I’ve washed mine a couple of times and they came out looking great! I hope this helps — we love our stools, so if you or your parents have any more questions, let me know! xo Jane

May 13, 2020 at 6:55 amHello!
Wondering how your stools are holding up. I just ordered the Balboa counter stool for our new house. One came in yesterday and while I love the look, they don’t seem as sturdy as I thought they would be. I’m worried that the rattan won’t hold up. It’s hard to find reviews. Any input is much appreciated! Thanks!

May 13, 2020 at 10:19 amHi Kelly! We’ve had our Balboa stools for a little over a year and they’ve held up beautifully. My husband is a big guy and he sits on them every day while he eats his lunch and they’ve shown absolutely no wear and tear. We’ve also had our grandkids climb up on them and they’ve never tipped over or been damaged in any way. The cushion covers are great as well–my husband accidentally spilled a glass of red wine on one of the stools and all we had to do was pop the cushion cover in the washing machine and wipe down the stool and everything was as good as new. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions. xo Jane

October 30, 2019 at 5:22 amHi, I love your kitchen. I’m hesitating to buy this Balboa stools. Mine are from Clive Christian and they are suer worn. Combination wood and rattan. It is not easy to find matching stools for Clive Christian kitchen. I think this stools can be it, just kind of worrying if they will last.

October 30, 2019 at 9:17 amHi, Marcela, thank you so much for your kind compliment regarding our kitchen! We’ve now had our Balboa stools for seven months, and I’ve been extremely happy with them. They still look brand new, despite some rough treatment from my husband and grandkids! We’ve had a few spills on the cushions which wiped right up with a wet paper towel. They have a brass foot rest which keeps them from getting worn where people put their feet. My husband is 6’3″ and well over 200 lbs., and he finds them comfortable, too. I hope this helps–let me know if you have further questions! xo Jane
