Simple Fall Decorating Ideas

I have to be honest–decorating for fall can be a little tricky for me, since I like to keep the overall vibe of our home light and bright.  I’ve found that when I try to add dark tones and heavy fabrics to our home, not only does it weigh down my spaces–it weighs down my mood!  So, for me, fall decor has to be added with a light touch.

When our girls were growing up, I LOVED going all out with fall decorating–we’re talking scarecrows, hay bales, themed pillows, crows and cobwebs—the whole pumpkin-y package!  But I think the days of having a set “theme” for every season might be becoming a thing of the past.

Nowadays, it’s all about adding what you love about that particular time of year.  Since I love the coziness of fall, I try to add that feeling through soft throws draped over chairs and ends of beds, textured pillows, baskets, and candles.  But I do still love sprinkling in a few pumpkins here and there!

Often, decorating for the seasons is more about removing things, rather than adding.  I usually start off by taking away the lighter textures and fabrics of summer. That alone is enough to make a huge difference!  Then it’s just a matter of adding in a few touches to create a warmer, more cozy atmosphere.

In the living room, I added in some velvet, a touch of fur, and some textured pillows to bring a cozier look to this space.  Plush velvet has become my go-to fabric for the cooler months.  It delivers coziness in spades!

Layering in textures is a great way to bring the feeling of fall to your home.  You can easily add or subtract elements to achieve the look you’re going for. Even accent pieces, like wood beads or a woven tray, can add texture and warmth to a space.

And if you feel your space is lacking those gorgeous colors of fall, you can always bring them into your space by taking a few clippings from the trees in your yard, or going faux, as I did in here last year. It’s amazing how this one simple change can transform your home from summer to fall!

Simple touches of fall

Since we have family coming to visit in October, I decided to switch out the all-white bedding in our our guest room for soft grey and layered in a woven rug for an added feeling of warmth and coziness.  The addition of a chunky cable-knit throw makes this the perfect spot for fall naps!

I also brought in this blue chair from my office, and I’m loving the vibrant pop of color it brings to this space.  Actually–I love this blue chair everywhere I put it, so I might need to order another!

This is a small space, so I added a tall basket at the end of the bed to store extra pillows and throws.

To welcome fall guests, I added a eucalyptus wreath to the front door. I love its vibrant green against the black door.

This sitting area in our front porch is where I love to enjoy my first cup of coffee of the day.  The addition of some colorful pillows and a cozy throw makes this space ready for chilly fall mornings!

In the entryway, I added a few fabric pumpkins in shades of blue, white and grey, popped on top of a little pedestal so they can be seen as you come in the door.

A candle in rich copper helps warm up this otherwise cool space.  Hopefully this little display will last through the fall (or until I decide to switch things up)!

Just off the kitchen, in our hearth room/sitting area, I incorporated a bit of autumn by replacing my summery shibori pillows with rich velvet and adding a grey windowpane blanket for chilly evenings.  The capri blue candle on the ottoman is one of my favorites.  Not only do I love the scent, I like that it has a cover to keep it looking pretty between uses.

This cozy corner is one of my favorite places to sit and read or just stare out the window.  It’s kind of hard to tell from this photo, but the aspen trees in our yard are already starting to change color!

One of my favorite ways to dress up our dining room table for fall is to feature natural elements, including fall flowers, clippings, and branches from the yard.  They bring in just the right amount of fall–and they’re easy on the budget!

I also love using seasonal fruits and vegetables to decorate our home–especially in the fall, when the farmer’s market is filled with a bounty of beautiful produce.  Plums, apples and pears are some of my favorites for adding a touch of fall to the table!

A couple of weeks ago, we had a fun day visiting a local farm where we picked our own flowers and berries.  I came home with a huge bucketful of colorful late-summer flowers that I divided into separate bouquets to add beautiful pops of color all over the house.  It just might be the best $10 I’ve ever spent!

Another option for fall arrangements is to check out your grocery store for bunches of greenery, which are usually very inexpensive.  And, if all else fails, there’s always faux!  My fall dining room includes faux artichokes, faux olive stems (from Target’s dollar spot!), and dusty faux sage from Ikea.

Thank you so much for stopping by, friends!  I hope you found a few simple fall decorating ideas for your home.  I also hope I convinced you that you don’t have to go all out (unless you want to, of course) in order to bring a touch of autumn to your spaces.
