What to Wear in Italy in the Fall: Packing Tips, Outfit Ideas, Weather and More

There’s something truly magical about Italy in the fall — the golden sunlight, the crisp air, and the cozy yet chic style that defines the season.

When my husband and I visited Italy in autumn, I fell completely in love with the slower pace, the almost non-existent crowds, and the array of wardrobe opportunities that came with the cooler weather.

After sharing all the details about traveling to Italy in the fall, one of the most common questions I get from readers is, “what should I wear in Italy in October?”.

That’s why I decided to create this companion piece to my earlier post, expanding on the wardrobe side of my Italian travel experience.

Whether you’re planning a romantic escape to Venice, a food-filled adventure in Rome, or a leisurely stroll through the vineyards of Tuscany, this post will help you figure out exactly what to wear in Italy in the fall.

I’ll be sharing tips on what to pack, how to dress like a local, and outfit ideas for different parts of Italy and types of occasions.

I’ll also take a look at typical autumn weather in Italy, so you can stay stylish and comfortable — no matter where your itinerary takes you.

So if you’ve been wondering how to dress for autumn in Italy, you’re in the right place.

From cozy layers to classic pieces that work from day to night, I’ve gathered all of my favorite fall fashion ideas to help you feel confident and put-together on your Italian getaway, and I hope you find this post helpful and informative!

Weather in Italy in Fall

As a quick reference, the average temperatures in Northern Italy in October are 65° F for the high and 45° F for the low. The average temperatures in Northern Italy in November are 50° F for the high and 35° F for the low.

In Central Italy, the average temperatures in October are 70° F for the high and 55° F for the low.  The average temperatures in Central Italy in November are 60° F for the high and 45° F for the low.

Temperature Range:
Fall in Italy brings a gentle cool down from the summer heat, with average daytime temperatures ranging between the mid-50s to mid-70s (℉). Nights get cooler, often dipping into the 40s and 50s, which means you’ll want to be ready for a bit of a chill, especially later in the season.

As I mentioned in my post on visiting Italy in the Fall, I suggest bringing a warm coat, hat, and gloves — just in case the temperature drops.

Regional Weather Differences:
Italy’s weather can vary quite a bit from north to south. In the north, cities like Milan and Venice might feel cooler and damper, especially as you move toward November.

Meanwhile, southern areas like Naples or Sicily tend to stay milder and more inviting into the later fall months.

Autumn Atmosphere:
Fall means fewer crowds and beautiful golden foliage, so it’s a wonderful time to enjoy Italy without all the summer tourists.

Also, rain becomes more common, so be prepared for the possibility of an occasional shower by carrying an umbrella in your day bag.

Layering is Essential:
Since fall temperatures in Italy shift quite a bit through the day, layering will be your best friend.

You’ll appreciate the flexibility of lighter tops under sweaters or jackets by day and the warmth of scarves and coats when evening comes.

What to Wear in Italy in the Fall: Fashion Tips from Locals

1. Embrace Neutral Tones
You’ll notice a lot of olive, cream, navy, and burgundy around Italy in the fall.

These colors work beautifully with the changing leaves and make mixing and matching a breeze.

2. Choose Quality Fabrics
Italians tend to favor natural fibers like wool, cotton, and cashmere in the fall.

They’re comfortable and breathe well, perfect for fluctuating temperatures.

3. Keep Your Footwear Practical but Stylish

Cobblestones can be charming but tricky underfoot.

Locals go for durable soles and well-made shoes that don’t sacrifice style.

4. Don’t Overpack Heavy Coats

Unless you’re heading to Northern Italy in November or December, a bulky winter coat isn’t needed.

A tailored jacket or lined trench coat doubles as a fashion statement and warmth.  Just make sure your overcoat or jacket is roomy enough to wear layers underneath.

5. Layer with a Purpose

Many Italians layer with intention—each piece adds to the look rather than just function.  Think a softly draped scarf or a structured blazer on top of your layers.

6. Add a Pop of Color with Accessories

If the clothes you’re bringing are neutral (which I recommend), a colorful scarf or burgundy handbag can brighten your outfit in a way Italians love: effortlessly chic.

7. Bring Sunglasses, Even in Fall

The Italian sun can still be quite bright in autumn, especially during midday. Sunglasses can be both practical and stylish.

8. Opt for Subtle Prints

Plaids, houndstooth, or subtle stripes in muted tones fit the season and are popular choices without being too loud.

9. Prepare for Occasional Rain with Style

Umbrellas come in handy, but a classic trench coat and waterproof boots make wet days feel a little less gloomy.

10. Don’t Forget a Stylish Hat

If you love hats, a felt hat will add warmth and a refined touch for your autumn outings.

Wrapping up

When you plan ahead and pack thoughtfully, the question of what to wear in Italy in the fall becomes easy.

By focusing on layering, opting for neutral fall colors, and taking shoes made for walking those lovely cobblestone streets (so important!), you’ll fully enjoy every part of your trip.
